A wholly delightful comedy of human nature, The Wedding Banquet taps into a rich stream of emotion via Ang Lee’s light, perceptive touch. In Manhattan, Wai-tung (Winston Chao) is quite tangibly a success story. Through hard work, talent and application he’s amassed a spread of property; it’s fortunate that his tenants are not all like Wei-wei (May Chin) though. An illegal Chinese immigrant, she scrapes a living through waitressing and painting. Unfortunately Wai-tung doesn’t meet his parent’s expectations in one very important way; Simon (Mitchell Lichtenstein) is the love of his life. In short, Wai-tung is gay.

The never confronted problem is that Wai-tung’s parents, Mr (Sihung Lung) and Mrs. Gao (Ah Lei Gua), have not the slightest inkling of his orientation. As a result romantic suggestions, dating agency forms and broad hints deluge him. In desperation Simon proposes an apparently ideal solution, one that covers a multitude of needs; Wai-tung should marry Wei-wei. That way he placates his parents, obtains a decent tax-break and helps Wei-wei acquire a Green Card. Even better, with the pressure off, his relationship with Simon is bound to improve. There’s just a single flaw, in that Wai-tung’s parents decide upon an American visit; after all, it is the wedding of their only son that we’re talking about…

Violence and anti-gay prejudice combine to make a heated custody battle all the more ugly in this tense domestic drama. Hannah Wyatt (Joely Richardson) is a single mother who lives with her nine-year-old son Oliver (Sam Bould) and her boyfriend Frank Donally (Jason Flemyng). Hannah was married to Martyn (Martin Donovan), but their relationship ended bitterly when Martyn chose to finally acknowledge his homosexuality and left her to move in with his lover Tom Dixon (Ian Hart). Oliver has suffered several unexplained injuries in recent months, and one day Hannah comes home from work to discover that Frank has severely wounded Oliver’s hand when he lashed out with violence over a minor bit of misbehavior.

Hannah kicks Frank out of the house, but when he returns — tearfully begging forgiveness and claiming he’ll never hurt Oliver again — she takes him back. Martyn learns of Frank’s violence against his son, and she sues to have full custody of Oliver for the sake of the child’s safety. Sidney Poitier, who in 1955 played a student in a tough inner-city high school, portrays a teacher assigned to a similar institution in To Sir, With Love. Unable to find work as an engineer, Poitier accepts a teaching post in London’s East End slums. To reach his sullen, rebellious students, Poitier throws away his textbooks and endeavors to reach them as human beings–and as the adults they’re going to become. It’s an uphill climb, but gradually the students are won over. They begin referring to Poitier as “Sir,” not out of blind obedience but as a gesture of genuine affection. Not that there aren’t obstacles to overcome: in addition to trying to get through to hardcase student Christian Roberts, Poitier must face down the resistance and hostility of his fellow teachers. The sweetly sentimental finale amply displays the vocal talents of Lulu, who trills the title song. Based on the novel by E. R. Brainwaite, To Sir, With Love was one of the biggest moneyspinners of 1967 (with this film, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner and In the Heat of the Night, Sidney Poitier had quite a year). In 1996, a belated made-for-TV sequel was produced, briefly reuniting To Sir with Love co-stars Sidney Poiter, Lulu and Judy Geason, none of whom looked a day older.

For the past ten years, Baltimore industrialist Wendell Armbruster has been spending the month of August at the Grand Hotel Excelsior in Ischia, allegedly to soak in the therapeutic mud baths for which the resort island is known. When he is killed in an automobile accident, his straitlaced son Wendell, Jr. journeys to Italy to claim his father’s body. Upon arrival he discovers his father was not alone in the Fiat he was driving; with him was his British mistress, whose daughter, free-spirited London shop girl Pamela Piggott, also is on the scene, though she clearly knew of their parents’ clandestine romance beforehand.

Complications arise when the Trotta family, whose vineyard was damaged when the elder Armbruster’s car drove into it, steal the bodies from the morgue and hold them for a two million lire ransom. Trying to assist is United States Ambassador J.J. Blodgett, who hopes to appoint the deceased man to an embassy post posthumously so the government can get involved in the recovery of his body. As their problems with local customs and bureaucratic red tape escalate, Wendell and Pamela find themselves falling in love with the assistance of manager Carlo Carlucci, valet Bruno, and the rest of the hotel staff, who are determined the couple will follow in the romantic path of their parents.
